Thailand 500,000 children affected by Thai floods

Aid workers from Save the Children are using boats to deliver aid in Thailand where up to 500,000 children are affected by monsoonal flooding.

The scale of destruction is already overwhelming and the situation for children is grim as water continues to rise around the suburbs of Bangkok. Roads have become rivers and Save the Children is sending out teams with food, hygiene kits and blankets by boat to help stranded families.

Save the Children is also in partnership with a local NGO and has set up a network of child-friendly spaces in major evacuation centres in Bangkok.

"Child-friendly spaces offer a safe place for children to play while providing respite for families under stress, so parents can focus on re-establishing their livelihoods knowing their children are in safe hands," says CEO of Save the Children New Zealand Liz Gibbs.

Save the Children has so far reached over 1,500 people affected by floods and plans to reach another 17,000 children in the coming days.

Across the border in Cambodia, extensive monsoonal flooding has also affected large parts of the country. This is having a direct impact on the lives of 1.2 million people. Save the Children is ramping up our response in Cambodia so that in the next few days we will reach 20,000 people with food and non-food aid. We will also open a network of child friendly spaces in Cambodia.
