BP succeeds in its oil-kill strategy

BP has announced its procedure to permanently plug the leaking oil well in the Gulf of Mexico to achieve the "desired outcome."

The two-stage "static kill" operation involved the pumping of heavy mud and cement into the well shaft.

The aim of the strategy, to kill and isolate the well by subduing the unstable deepwater oil leak, succeeded on Wednesday, according to a BP statement.

BP's statement reads: "The well pressure is now being controlled by the hydrostatic pressure of the drilling mud, the desired outcome of the static kill procedure."

Engineers for BP thought the have procedure might have taken more time to complete but favourable weather conditions helped the exercise.

On Monday the US government released its revised figures showing almost 5 million barrels of oil leaked before the well was temporarily capped on July 15th.

The release of the 5 million barrels has made it the world's largest accidental release of oil.
