Oil well cap proving successful in BP spill
BP has announced a pressure test on the capped Macondo well in the Gulf of Mexico should be complete by the end of the weekend.
The oil company has successfully stopped the oil leak for the first time since April 20th.
BP engineers installed a new tight-fitting containment cap, a stack of valves with pressure monitoring equipment, on Thursday.
The cap, which weighs 80 tons and is 12 metres high has so far responded to tests to gauge its structural integrity.
BP officials have said they are feeling more confident as the hours go by, but will keep monitoring and make further decisions as the srtucture is tested.
They have said an improper test could crack the wall of the well, causing crude and gas to leak elsewhere.
