The OSCE High Commissioner on National Minorities Lamberto Zannier visited Ukraine’s Zakarpattia region from 5 to 7 February 2018 to assess inter-ethnic relations in the region. His visit to this western region of Ukraine was a follow-up to his trip to Kyiv in December 2017.

During his visits to the city of Uzhhorod, Solomonovo village, and the cities of Mukachevo and Berehove, Zannier discussed issues related to national minorities with the representatives of central and regional authorities, local minority communities and other stakeholders.

The High Commissioner paid particular attention to minority issues in the field of education.

He exchanged views about the modalities of implementing the recently adopted law on education with the authorities, national minority representatives and education professionals.

The High Commissioner visited several schools in the region, including a school which pilots bilingual education.

“Bilingual education is an effective way to find a balance between preserving and promoting minority identity while also enabling successful societal integration through strengthening the role of the State language,” said Zannier, welcoming the use of this approach in the multi-ethnic Zakarpattia region.

Zannier added he will continue co-operating with the Ukrainian authorities on policy solutions and practical steps to strengthen the integration of Ukraine’s diverse society.
