New programme calls for a joint vision to achieve Secondary and Higher Education for All in Europe
Education International has partnered with the Organising Bureau of European School Student Unions and the European Students’ Union to target their members through a joint action programme aimed at advancing the Sustainable Development Goals.
As the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) approach a year since being adopted, Education International (EI), the Organising Bureau of European School Student Unions (OBESSU) and the European Students’ Union (ESU) are teaming up to address secondary and tertiary education in Europe.
While the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) were centred on primary education, there are now explicit commitments to secondary and tertiary education in the SDGs.This is why EI, the OBESSU and the ESU have released an Action Plan that sets out eight priorities for equitable quality secondary and tertiary education in Europe. Each priority is accompanied by two demands and one specific policy recommendation, which the partners hope will inspire the development of joint actions at the national level.
The joint action seeks to achieve equal access to quality education at all levels in Europe, which has yet to be achieved. The programme urges European governments to take action to make this a reality by 2030.
To make this a reality, the three organisations call upon affiliates, partners, policy makers and civil society to join the vision and take up its demands, to remind European governments of their commitments, while proactively contributing to make equitable access to and the completion of secondary and higher education possible across Europe over the next 15 years.
