Finding innovative, practical solutions to the social challenges; the need to build a movement of empowered - and empowering - teachers; and embracing a humane, democratic approach to transforming education systems - those were the issues discussed by educators and experts at a recent event in London.

The event, jointly organised by the Royal Society for the encouragement of Arts, Manufactures and Commerce (RSA), Ashoka and Education International aimed to provide opportunities for engaged individuals and organisations in the education space.

EI's Jelmer Evers opened the afternoon by presenting Flip the System, an influential collection of thought-provoking contributions by education experts and teachers from around the world, making the case to move away from a purely economic approach to education, to instead embrace a more humane, and more democratic practice of education, which places teachers at the steering wheel of educational systems worldwide.

Facilitated by Ross Hall, Director for Education at Ashoka, participants then intensively discussed possibilites for cooperation to jointly form a network enabling this improvement of education employees' professional standing and the enhancement of education systems from the ground up, inspired by Flip the System.
