The government of Buenos Aires province, led by Daniel Scioli, has threatened to prosecute the General Secretary of SUTEBA, Roberto Baradel, for extortion and coercion, for his role in the teachers’ dispute in Buenos Aires province.

In response, CTERA has called for the full respect of the right to strike and of all current labour legislation, including the Parity law (on the negotiation of teachers’ salaries) in Buenos Aires.

CTERA has stressed the need to resolve all the problems facing education in the province: salaries, as well as infrastructure and social works, amongst others, all of which fall under the direct responsibility of Governor Scioli.

The EI expresses its solidarity with its Argentinian affiliate and recalls that the right to strike must be guaranteed as a trade union right that is internationally recognised, inter alia, by Conventions 87 and 98 of the International Labour Organisation.
