The Education World Forum (EWF) is the internationally recognised ministerial forum for debating future practice in education. On January 10th, Irina Bokova, the Director-General of the UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organizations (UNESCO), spoke at one of the meetings.

Key points in her speech included:
(1) Improving skills of teachers and promoting competency standards through the Information and Communication Technology (ICT) Competency Framework for Teachers (which can be downloaded from the UNESCO website).
(2) Forming partnership between the private, public and NGO sectors.
(3) Launching an initiative in the United States on teaching respect for all – a new curriculum on anti-racism and tolerance

In terms of primary education, Ms. Bokova stressed that more effort is still needed to combat illiteracy and provide universal education for all, and an additional 1.9 million teachers are needed to achieve universal primary education by 2015.

In light of this fact, perhaps teachers in Taiwan can find avenues to contribute their knowledge and skills, as the world becomes more intricately related and fragile.
