Enforcement Action Against Food Companies Violating Federal Laws

2010-06-11

(RTTNews) - The companies that violate federal laws designed to protect the safety of the nation's food supply may not be allowed to get away lightly as can be seen from the enforcement action taken against California soy-product manufacturer Lifesoy Inc.

The FDA in a press release said that as part of the consent decree, Lifesoy has been ordered to "retain a qualified sanitation expert, with no personal or financial ties to the defendants, to develop and implement a written sanitation program to assure that the operations comply with current Good Manufacturing Practices".

Before it may reopen, Lifesoy has also been required to receive FDA approval of its sanitation program and have the agency re-inspect the facility.

Commenting on enforcement action taken against Lifesoy, FDA Acting Associate Commissioner for Regulatory Affairs Michael Chappell said "The FDA will seek enforcement action against companies that continue to violate federal laws designed to protect the safety of the nation's food supply."
