Minnesota-Based Medtronic Inc. to Pay $9.9 Million to Resolve Claims That Company Paid Kickbacks to Physicians

Medtronic Inc., of Fridley, Minnesota, has agreed to pay the United States $9.9 million to resolve allegations under the False Claims Act that the company used various types of payments to induce physicians to implant pacemakers and defibrillators manufactured and sold by Medtronic, the Justice Department announced.

The Justice Department and Internal Revenue Service (IRS) announced that a federal grand jury in Anchorage, Alaska, returned a superseding indictment charging Michael D. Brandner, an Anchorage physician specializing in plastic surgery, on three counts of tax evasion. Brandner has also been charged with seven counts of wire fraud in an indictment returned in September 2013.

Army Soldier Sentenced for Facilitating Thefts of Fuel in Afghanistan

United States Army soldier Albert Kelly III of Fort Knox, Kentucky, was sentenced to serve 18 months in prison for his role in stealing fuel at Forward Operating Base (FOB) Salerno in Afghanistan. In addition to his prison term, Kelly was sentenced to three years of supervised release and ordered to pay $100,000 in restitution.
