The bipartisan bill allows those convicted of nonviolent crimes to ask the courts to seal their criminal records. They could then present themselves, according to the legal system, as lacking a criminal background. These measures would improve their chances of getting a job and, in turn, reduce the threat of hunger or recidivism.

WB/Dominican Republic: More than 1.3 Million Poor Dominicans to Benefit from Social Protection, Better Employability and Housing

The World Bank Board of Executive Directors Thursday approved a new project for the Dominican Republic worth US$75 million, which seeks to ensure that thousands of citizens gain access to a comprehensive social protection package and help reduce extreme poverty in the country’s poorest provinces. This will not only increase access to the National Health Insurance (SeNaSa, in Spanish) and education to the most vulnerable, but will also increase their employability skills and enable basic improvements to housing.
