UNICEF calls for an increase in education spending as new report reveals global crisis in learning

More than two-thirds of schoolchildren in low-income countries will not learn basic primary level skills in 2030 despite an ambitious goal to get every child in school and learning, according to a report launched on 18 September by the International Commission on Financing Global Education Opportunity.

UK: Unions condemn reintroduction of selective grammar schools

Teacher unions have reacted strongly to the Government’s proposal to end the ban on the creation of new grammar schools, and are demanding measures intended to prevent poorer children from losing out.

Grammar schools are state secondary schools that select their pupils by means of an examination taken by children at age 11. There are only about 163 grammar schools in England, out of some 3,000 state secondary schools, and a further 69 grammar schools in Northern Ireland. The ban on the creation of new grammar schools has been in place since 1998.

OECD’s Education at a Glance 2016 reveals public benefits of education and need for increased spending

Education International has reacted to the latest Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) Education at a Glance (EaG) 2016, stressing the positive impact of quality education, and demanding an increased investment in education.

“This year's ‘Education at Glance' provides some highly disturbing statistics, stresses Education International (EI) General Secretary Fred van Leeuwen, noting that since last year's report the average percentage of the GDP spent on education has slipped slightly rather than increased.

Over 50 unprecedented combined meetings of 60,000 members from both the Post Primary Teachers’ Association and the New Zealand Educational Institute Te Riu Roa are being held to oppose the government’s proposal for ‘Global Funding’.

New Zealand’s educators from early childhood to secondary schooling are holding these joint meetings for the first time between 5 and 16 September, to plan a response to the government’s proposal for ‘Global Funding, or what they view as a’ return to the failed bulk funding experiment of the 1990s. The unions say this could result in fewer teachers, larger class sizes, and could impact on the quality of children’s education.
