12th grade dropouts have higher rates of cigarette, alcohol and illicit drug use

Youth in the 12th grade age range (ages 16 to 18} who have dropped out of school prior to graduating are more likely than their counterparts to be current users of cigarettes, alcohol, marijuana and other illicit drugs, according to a report by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA).

France: primary school teachers strike for reform

The Syndicat national unitaire des instituteurs professeurs des écoles et PEGC - a national school teachers’ trade union (SNUipp-FSU), one of EI's national affiliates, announced that almost six teachers in 10 (58 per cent) went on strike on 12 February to demand a successful reform of school timetables for all students across the territory and which takes into account the opinions of both teachers and parents.

Chile: Teaching tops confidence survey

Teaching is the profession that inspires the highest level of trust and confidence in Chile. That’s according to the findings of a national survey conducted in December, 2012, by Centro de Estudios de la Realidad Contemporánea, which was reported by EI’s affiliate Colegio de Profesores de Chile.

The U.S. Commerce Department’s United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO), the National Science Foundation (NSF), and NBC Learn, the educational arm of NBC News, today launched an 11-part “Science of Innovation” series to coincide with the 165th birthday of American inventor Thomas Edison. The program represents the latest intellectual property (IP) education efforts by the USPTO and serves as a public-private partnership leveraging the best strengths of federal agencies, industry, and educators to demonstrate the connection between IP and the science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) fields.

Ireland: unions rally for debt burden to be lifted

EI affiliates in Ireland are taking part in a day of action organised by the Irish Congress of Trade Unions (ICTU) this Saturday, 9 February. The protest will call for the €64 billion bank debt burden on Ireland to be lifted. It will take place simultaneously in Dublin, Cork, Galway, Limerick, Waterford and Sligo.

Germany: Teachers in most stressful profession

The Gewerkschaft Erziehung und Wissenschaft (GEW) and Verband Bildung und Erziehung(VBE), two of Education International’s national affiliates in Germany, have reacted strongly to research showing that teachers, as well as construction workers, are more stressed than other professionals. The study, conducted by the German trade union confederation, DGB, was released on 18 January and shows that stress in the workplace is not restricted to a specific workgroup.
