Committee MEPs back beefed-up environmental impact assessment directive
A proposed update of EU law to make environmental impact assessments clearer, build in biodiversity and climate change, and involve the public, was backed by the Environment Committee on Wednesday. This update, already informally agreed with the Council of Ministers, includes beefed up rules to ensure that decisions to authorize development projects are not influenced by conflicts of interest.

A host of Hollywood stars including Joaquin Phoenix, Kellan Lutz and Gillian Anderson have joined thousands of concerned consumers in calling for an end to every day products being manufactured through forest destruction.
The Tiger Manifesto, launched by Greenpeace, is a way for consumers to demand products are forest and tiger-friendly. Forest destruction is driving animals like the Sumatran tiger in Indonesia, which number as few as 400, to the edge of extinction.

US, World Act to Save Elephants
The Obama administration has unveiled a comprehensive strategy for combating wildlife trafficking in hopes of curbing illicit poaching that is threatening to wipe out elephants, rhinoceros and other endangered species in Africa. The document issued Tuesday places an almost complete ban on the ivory trade in the United States. Meanwhile, representatives of many African countries are meeting with world's leading conservationists in London to discuss how to stop the illegal sale of ivory.
