Thailand: Court Dissolves Opposition Party
Thailand’s Constitutional Court dissolved the opposition Future Forward Party on February 21, 2020, on politically motivated allegations, seriously damaging the country’s return to genuine democratic rule, Human Rights Watch said on Febuary 22. The court ruled that the party took an illegal loan from its leader, Thanathorn Juangroongruangkit, and imposed 10-year political bans on 16 of its executive members.

Tajikistan: Journalist Held on Baseless Charges
Tajik authorities have detained a prominent independent journalist, apparently for his writing, Human Rights Watch said on Febuary 21. Daler Sharipov, who has been detained since January 28, 2020 for “inciting religious discord,” faces up to five years in prison if convicted. He has often criticized the government and reported on sensitive topics.
