At least 175 people have been kidnapped for ransom during 2015 in the Democratic Republic of Congo, Human Rights Watch said on December 16. Former and current members of armed groups appear responsible for many of the kidnappings.

Witness: Abducted From School and Forced to Fight in South Sudan’s War
It was the middle of class when armed men burst into a school one morning in December 2013 in the town of Rubkona, in South Sudan’s Unity State. Pointing their weapons at bewildered pupils, the men forced scores of teenage boys to climb into military trucks that had pulled up outside. Across town, in another Rubkona school, similar scenes were unfolding. There was no time for the boys to object, or to say goodbye to their families.

Thailand: Jailed Activist Needs Urgent Medical Care
Thai authorities should immediately provide necessary medical treatment to Thanet Anantawong, a critic of Thailand’s junta who was arrested in his sickbed and has been held in military custody since December 13, 2015, Human Rights Watch said on December 15. The authorities have accused him of committing sedition and computer crimes for sharing Facebook commentary about army corruption scandals.

Australia: Don’t Revoke Citizenship Without Safeguards
Australia’s parliament should substantially revise a new counterterrorism law empowering authorities to revoke Australian citizenship from dual nationals – including children – without adequate legal safeguards. The Allegiance to Australia Act (“Allegiance Act”) was passed by parliament on December 3, 2015, and will take effect with the assent of the governor-general.

Yemen: Houthis Shut Groups, Detain Activists
Houthi authorities in Yemen have closed several dozen nongovernmental organizations and arbitrarily detained numerous activists since taking over the capital, Sanaa, in late 2014. Human Rights Watch interviewed activists with four Sanaa-based organizations that the Houthis closed down in April 2015, apparently because of their links to the Islah political party, which is opposed to the Houthis.
