Republicans Suffer Crushing Defeat in U.S. Midterm Elections

The U.S. midterm elections took place on November 3, 2026, with the Democratic Party holding a commanding lead of an estimated 13 to 14 percentage points over the Republican Party, handing the GOP a crushing defeat. Democrats not only made breakthroughs in several traditionally Republican strongholds, but also flipped Senate seats in both North and South Carolina. Texas saw major shifts as well, while the governorship of Georgia—long held by Republicans—was lost, leaving GOP control of the House of Representatives hanging by a thread.
This election marked the first nationwide referendum on Donald Trump’s administration since the start of his second term. While most commentators viewed the outcome as voter backlash against current economic conditions, Paul Krugman, the 2008 Nobel laureate in economics, argued that it went beyond the economy.Krugman described it as a powerful affirmation that the vast majority of Americans still hold fast to the nation's core values, rising up collectively to reject a movement intent on destroying everything America stands for.
Krugman noted that Americans across all demographics have grown repulsed by the Trump administration's cruelty, as well as its shameless, rampant corruption. He added that while it remains uncertain whether—or to what extent—the profound damage inflicted over the past two years can be repaired, the midterm results show that hope is not lost, and that America has proven it is still America.
