Japan’s Liberal Democratic Party announced on the 26th that former Prime Minister Yasuo Fukuda, Japan’s 91st prime minister, died on October 22 at the age of 90. Fukuda was elected to the House of Representatives seven times and held several key positions, including chief cabinet secretary and prime minister. During his tenure from 2007 to 2008, he promoted the establishment of the Consumer Affairs Agency and reforms to the public records management system. He also chaired the 2008 G8 Summit in Toyako, Hokkaido, leaving a lasting mark on Japanese politics.

Current Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi expressed her deepest condolences upon learning of Fukuda’s death. She said that Fukuda devoted many years to public service and made significant contributions to political stability and the well-being of the Japanese people through his extensive experience and outstanding insight. She added that his contributions deserved to be remembered by society and extended her heartfelt sympathies to his family, thanking him for his years of service to the nation and its people.

In addition to recognizing Fukuda’s political achievements, Takaichi also shared a rare personal recollection of their interactions. She recalled that after attending the Imperial Palace’s New Year greeting event, she and her husband were invited to the Fukudas’ home to enjoy teppanyaki. Although she felt somewhat nervous at the time, she remembered the occasion as a pleasant and memorable experience.

In his later years, Fukuda remained active in diplomacy and exchanges related to Japan-China relations.
