U.S. President Donald Trump said during a public speech at a police academy on Long Island, New York, on the 14th that after defeating Iran, the United States would soon declare the Strait of Hormuz to be “U.S. territory.” Trump also reiterated that Iran must not be allowed to acquire nuclear weapons. His remarks immediately drew a strong backlash from authorities in Tehran.
Trump has recently escalated his stance toward Iran and claimed that the United States had already taken control of the Strait of Hormuz. During his speech at the police academy on Long Island, Trump made another startling statement, saying, “After we completely defeat Iran—they’ve already been devastated—I will very soon announce that the Strait of Hormuz is U.S. territory.”

As oil prices rise and add to inflationary pressures in the United States, Trump said the measures were necessary to prevent an “extremely evil country” from obtaining nuclear weapons. He added, “Remember this: when you pay a little more, when oil reaches $4 a gallon, that’s okay. I will not apologize for it. I did the right thing.”

Trump’s remarks immediately triggered a backlash from Iran. Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Majid Takht-Ravanchi responded forcefully on X, saying that the decision to keep the Strait of Hormuz open or closed rests with Iran.

Because neither the United States nor Iran can fully control the Strait of Hormuz, persistently rising oil and natural gas prices, along with the economic fallout from the war, could become one of the key issues in the U.S. midterm elections in November.
