United Nations Helicopter Ambushed
A United Nations spokesman said the Al-Shabaab, an extremist Somali organization linked to Al-Qaeda, attacked a United Nations helicopter that made an emergency landing in Somalia today. It was learned that there were nine passengers on board, one of whom was killed, two of whom are unaccounted for, and six of whom were captured by the Al-Shabaab.
Foreign media pointed out that the narrowly held helicopter belongs to the United Nations Support Office in Somalia (UNSOA), whose main task is to provide logistical support for the United Nations peacekeeping forces in Africa, including food and fuel supplies, and to provide air and land evacuation of casualties. The helicopter was originally destined for the Wisil area, but was attacked by Al-Shabaab after it was forced to land near the village of Gadoon in Galgaduud due to an aircraft malfunction. A U.N. spokesman said rescue and other operations have been launched.
