UNICEF raises alarm about children caught up in Ukraine violence
“Seven children have sustained gunshot and shrapnel injuries during violent clashes in East Ukraine since May 9.
“In one instance, a 15-year-old was shot at a roadblock while being in a car. The child is wounded in the abdomen and intestines and remains in serious condition.
“The youngest of the injured children is four years old and suffered shrapnel wounds while walking with his grandmother.
“UNICEF is deeply concerned that the recent escalation of violence is now having a greater impact on children. The Donetsk Children’s Hospital is closed and children were kept away from school in some city centres.
“A UNICEF rapid assessment in Donetsk also shows nearly half the children surveyed have been exposed to violence or a terrifying event.
“UNICEF calls for an immediate end to the violence and urges all groups involved to protect children.“UNICEF continues to closely monitor the situation but it is having difficulty verifying some of the reports it is receiving. Our thoughts are with the injured children and we wish them a quick recovery.”
