Gunmen Attack Indian Consulate in Afghanistan
Authorities in western Afghanistan say security forces have killed two gunmen who attacked the Indian consulate in Herat.
Officials say at least three heavily armed gunmen opened fire on the consulate Friday morning. No consulate staff members were injured in the attack.
The Herat consulate is guarded by Indo-Tibetan Border Police and Afghan forces.
There has been no immediate claim of responsibility for the attack.
India has invested $2 billion dollars in reconstruction aid to Afghanistan.
Herat lies near Afghanistan's border with Iran.
The violence comes as the Taliban has launched its annual spring offensive, promising to step up attacks against Afghan security forces in a bid to undermine the Western-backed government. The Taliban have also pledged to disrupt voting as Afghans prepare for a second round of presidential elections next month.
Afghanistan is experiencing a rise in insurgent attacks as foreign troops prepare to withdraw from the country by the end of the year.
