From Euromaidan to the illegal referendum in Crimea
EU-Ukraine ties showed increasing promise as Kiev seemed to take the long path leading to European integration. When the government halted talks on the Association Agreement in November, it sparked months of protests, leading to dramatic challenges for the country. Russia moved its armed forces to Crimea where the pro-Russian parliament decided on a referendum, widely considered illegal in the west. With its territorial integrity under threat, Ukraine’s future remains uncertain.
