Bomb Blast Kills 1 in Burma's Shan State
Burmese police have announced that one person was killed when two bombs exploded in a restive eastern state in the latest small-scale bombing in the Southeast Asian country.
Police say they are still investigating the explosions, which occurred early Thursday in the town of Namkham, in Shan state, not far from Burma's border with China. Shan state is home to ethnic minority rebels who have long fought against the Burmese military.
A series of unexplained minor bombings and attempted bombings have taken place across Burma in the past week. The most notable was an attack on a prestigious Rangoon hotel that wounded an American woman.
The U.S. Embassy in Burma condemned the attacks on Thursday, saying they "have no place in a civilized society" and expressing confidence that authorities can deal with such "acts of terror."
Police have arrested three men in connection with the series of bombings, which have now killed three people.
Bombings, many of them minor, were frequent during the decades when Burma was tightly controlled by military rulers. Such incidents have become rare during the two years since the military handed power to a nominally civilian government.
