IPU: Political will lacking to end Syrian crisis peacefully | WPN World People News

The Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) has renewed its call for an urgent political solution to be reached to bring the Syrian conflict to an end.

IPU President Abdelwahad Radi says the looming threat of external military action can only lead to greater bloodshed in Syria, where already 100,000 people have been killed.

He said IPU welcomes the decision by the British parliament to reject a motion by the government seeking authority to use military force in Syria.

Mr Abdelwahad said the vote against the motion showed what parliamentarians around the world could do to press for alternative to guns and bombs in bringing peace.

Jemini Pandya is IPU's spokesperson in Geneva.

"We feel very strongly that an international consensus has to be found urgently on a political solution. Recent history has shown that military path isn't really the way to go. There has been already so much blood that has been shed in Syria and we strongly believe that there doesn’t need to be any more. What is lacking clearly is a political will to ending the conflict in a peaceful way and this is something that the IPU feels that it really needs to be found."

Ms Pandya says the IPU is in constant contact with parliamentarians in Syria and was ready to provide guidance on the way forward if requested.
