NASA Space Rescue Mission Fails as Swift Observatory’s Operational Life Enters Its Final Countdown

The U.S. National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) announced on the 19th that a space rescue mission originally intended to extend the life of the Swift Observatory had failed. The LINK spacecraft responsible for carrying out the mission began experiencing persistent spinning and attitude-control problems after entering orbit. Despite weeks of repair efforts, the spacecraft could not be restored to normal operations, forcing the cancellation of the planned attempt to capture the Swift Observatory and raise its orbit.
The mission was carried out by space startup Katalyst Space Technologies, with NASA investing approximately $30 million. The goal was for LINK to approach the Swift Observatory, which is currently orbiting at an altitude of about 347 kilometers, attach to it, and then tow it to an orbit approximately 600 kilometers above Earth, extending the telescope’s operational life by several years. It was the first U.S. attempt to extend the lifespan of a space observatory through in-orbit servicing.
LINK was launched aboard a Pegasus XL rocket on July 3, but began spinning uncontrollably shortly after reaching space. Engineers continued efforts to repair the spacecraft and updated its attitude-control software. Although the measures temporarily reduced its rotation rate, they were unable to fully stabilize the spacecraft. NASA and Katalyst Space Technologies ultimately determined that the problem could not be resolved and decided to halt the original capture and orbit-raising procedures.
The Swift Observatory was launched in 2004 at a construction cost of approximately $500 million. It primarily observes high-energy astronomical phenomena, including gamma-ray bursts, X-rays and ultraviolet radiation. Originally designed for a mission lasting only about two years, the observatory has now been operating for more than 20 years. In recent years, increased solar activity and atmospheric drag in the upper atmosphere have caused its orbit to gradually decay. Without further intervention, it is expected to begin re-entering the atmosphere later this year and eventually burn up.
Although the rescue mission failed to achieve its primary objective, LINK will continue to approach the Swift Observatory to conduct close-proximity operational tests and gather data needed for future in-orbit servicing missions. NASA and Katalyst Space Technologies said the technical experience gained from the challenging mission will help advance future space services, including satellite repair, capture and orbital adjustment.
