India’s Skyroot Aerospace Achieves First Orbital Launch with Vikram-1 Rocket

Indian private space company Skyroot Aerospace successfully completed the maiden orbital flight of its Vikram-1 rocket on July 18, delivering multiple payloads into low Earth orbit (LEO). The mission marks India’s first successful orbital launch by a private company and represents another major step in the country’s expansion into the global commercial space market.

The approximately 22-meter-tall rocket lifted off from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre on Sriharikota Island as part of its inaugural mission, codenamed “Aagaman.” About 15 minutes after launch, Vikram-1 successfully deployed its payloads into an orbit roughly 450 kilometers above Earth. During the mission, engineers evaluated the rocket’s propulsion, avionics, telemetry, navigation, and guidance systems while collecting flight data to support future commercial launches.

Vikram-1 is capable of carrying up to 350 kilograms of payload to low Earth orbit. The rocket uses a multi-stage solid-fuel propulsion system combined with a 3D-printed liquid-fuel engine. In addition to customer payloads, the mission included several technology demonstrations designed to test the rocket’s performance in the space environment.

Founded in 2018, Skyroot Aerospace made history in 2022 by launching Vikram-S, India’s first privately developed suborbital rocket. Earlier this year, the company became India’s first space startup to achieve a valuation exceeding US$1 billion. Since India began opening its space sector to private companies in 2020, the number of space startups has grown rapidly, with commercial satellite launch services emerging as a key focus for both the government and private industry.

As global demand for small satellites continues to rise and countries strengthen their independent space capabilities, Vikram-1’s successful test flight is widely regarded as a major milestone for India’s private space industry. Skyroot Aerospace said Vikram-1 will undergo additional testing before entering regular commercial launch operations.
