AI Brings New Life to Archaeology by Reconstructing the Final Moments of a Pompeii Victim

Pompeii Archaeological Park recently unveiled a groundbreaking project for the first time. In collaboration with University of Padua, the park used artificial intelligence (AI) and image-editing technology to reconstruct the appearance of a victim who died during the eruption of Mount Vesuvius nearly 2,000 years ago. Using skeletal remains excavated from the Porta Stabia Necropolis along with historical data, the project transformed cold archaeological evidence into a highly immersive and lifelike portrait, offering a new perspective on understanding this historical disaster.
The reconstructed image depicts an adult man running along a road covered in debris, holding a large red terracotta mortar over his head to shield himself from falling volcanic rocks, with the erupting Mount Vesuvius visible in the background. Archaeologists believe the man died while attempting to flee toward the seaside during the early stages of the disaster. Personal belongings found with him included an oil lamp, an iron ring, and ten copper coins. These details vividly illustrate the daily life and final struggle of ancient Romans and also confirm historical accounts describing how residents used everyday objects to protect themselves during the catastrophe.
The director of Pompeii Archaeological Park, Gabriel Zuchtriegel, emphasized that when used properly, artificial intelligence has the potential to revolutionize classical studies by helping researchers process massive amounts of archaeological data and making scientific discoveries more emotionally engaging for the public. As a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the ancient city of Pompeii is being brought back to life in a more vivid and compelling way through the use of modern technology.
