“Artemis II” Sets New Record: Farthest Crewed Journey from Earth in History

NASA’s Artemis II mission marked a new milestone in aerospace history on the 6th (Eastern Time). This crewed lunar flyby not only successfully ventured deep into space, but also surpassed the threshold set more than half a century ago, becoming the farthest distance humanity has ever traveled into outer space.
According to mission data, the four astronauts led by Reid Wiseman exceeded the previous record from over 50 years ago, setting the farthest human journey into space in history. The spacecraft then continued outward, ultimately reaching a maximum distance of approximately 406,700 kilometers from Earth, extending the previous record by more than 6,600 kilometers.
Before reaching this unprecedented distance, the four crew members listened to an encouraging recorded message from the late legendary astronaut Jim Lovell, symbolizing intergenerational legacy and breakthrough. The success of this mission represents that humanity has gained stronger capabilities for deep-space operations in the journey to return to the Moon.
After completing this historic expedition, the Orion spacecraft successfully utilized celestial gravitational forces to enter a so-called “free-return trajectory.” This precise design allows the spacecraft to turn back toward Earth without consuming large amounts of propulsion.
At present, the astronauts have completed the farthest phase of exploration and are heading back toward Earth at high speed. NASA stated that the return journey is expected to take approximately four days. If all goes smoothly, Orion is scheduled to splash down in the Pacific Ocean on the 10th (Eastern Time), completing this ten-day test mission and laying a solid foundation for future lunar landing plans.
