Shifting Focus to the Moon! Musk to Build a “Self-Growing City”

Elon Musk, currently the world’s richest man, recently posted on his social media platform that his space exploration company, SpaceX, will adjust its space exploration strategy by shifting its development focus from Mars to the Moon, prioritizing the establishment of a “self-growing” city on the lunar surface. An uncrewed lunar mission is scheduled for March 2027, while the originally planned uncrewed Mars mission in 2026 will be postponed.
Since the conclusion of the U.S. Apollo program in 1972, humans have not set foot on the Moon for more than half a century. Today, the Moon has once again become a competitive arena for major powers in aerospace technology. Both the United States and China are attempting to send astronauts to the Moon within the next decade. To ensure the sustainability of human civilization, this competition has shifted from merely “planting a flag” to pursuing long-term “settlement.”
In a statement regarding the merger of SpaceX and xAI, it was noted that by realizing the potential of space-based data centers, the initiative would not only secure funding but also facilitate the construction of a self-growing lunar base and the development of a Martian civilization, ultimately advancing humanity’s expansion into the universe.
Whether Musk can complete the establishment of this “self-growing” lunar city before 2030 will determine his ultimate place in the history of human space exploration.
