As the impacts of population aging and declining birth rates reshape demographic structures, labor shortages in the job market have become increasingly severe. During the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas, robots were described by Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang as “AI immigrants.” He argued that robots will help address labor shortages across industries—an idea that contrasts with the common perception that robots will take jobs away from humans.

In a 90-minute panel discussion, Huang stated that this “robot revolution” would help resolve the global manufacturing sector’s labor shortage. In addition to compensating for labor losses caused by population aging and demographic contraction, robots can also drive economic growth. These “AI immigrants” are capable of taking on jobs that humans are increasingly unwilling to do, as well as tasks that are highly repetitive, labor-intensive, and tedious. As a result, more human labor can be freed up to enter different industries, ultimately generating greater productivity.

Huang emphasized that without this source of labor from “AI immigrants,” it would be difficult for human society to sustain its current economic scale and standard of living. Sharing a similar view is Tesla CEO Elon Musk, who has also frequently cited labor aging and demographic decline as reasons to push for automation and robotic technologies. Huang pointed out that research and development efforts will focus on areas such as mobility, joint flexibility, and fine motor control. He also expects that robots with “human-level skills” will emerge in the near future.
