On August 27, Google officially launched the latest generation of Gemini’s image editing technology, highlighting its ability to preserve the essence of people and pets even when changing outfits or backgrounds—addressing the common problem of AI-generated images being “similar but distorted.” Developed by the DeepMind team, the new model has already been rolled out in the Gemini app, allowing users to refine pictures through dialogue and even blend multiple photos into a new scene for a more natural effect.

The key feature of this update is character appearance consistency. Even after multiple rounds of edits, facial features, proportions, and clothing details remain intact, avoiding the issue of “face-swapping.” Users can freely adjust backgrounds, objects, and styles, or apply the tone and texture of one photo to another, creating a personalized visual style. All images processed by Gemini will automatically include a visible watermark and a SynthID digital marker, ensuring traceability and addressing concerns over misinformation and deepfakes.

Beyond image upgrades, Google has also enhanced NotebookLM, its AI note-taking assistant. The existing “video summarization” feature has been expanded to more than 80 languages, including Traditional Chinese, enabling students, researchers, and self-learners to quickly capture key points. Voice summaries have also evolved from brief highlights to in-depth, structured analyses, providing the same level of detail as the English version and helping users gain a more comprehensive understanding.

This update underscores Google’s push to strengthen its competitiveness in the generative AI market. Compared with rivals such as OpenAI’s DALL·E 3, Adobe Firefly, and Stable Diffusion, Gemini aims to differentiate itself with consistency in characters, flexible editing, and transparency safeguards.
