Australian's further charges laid in counter terrorism operation
The Brisbane Joint Counter Terrorism Team will lay additional charges against a 22-year-old Boronia Heights man as part of its ongoing investigation into terrorism-related offences.
The man now faces a total of seven charges. The additional charges are:
• Committing an act in preparation for a terrorist act, namely the transportation of a firearm, contrary to section 101.6 of the Criminal Code (Cth) (maximum penalty life imprisonment); and
• Possessing things, namely machetes, knives, balaclavas, military fatigues, fuel, corks, and a firearm, connected with preparation for a terrorist act, contrary to section 101.4 (1) of the Criminal Code (Cth) (maximum penalty 15 years imprisonment).
These additional charges are as a result of ongoing investigations into the man’s activities including the alleged preparation and recruitment for incursions into Syria to fight.
The man is expected to appear in the Brisbane Magistrates Court.
