EI leaders support women’s rights activism around the world | WPN World People News

The Education International Executive Board has issued a statement in support of the women’s rights activists, trade union activists and others who have been demonstrating in recent months against violations of women’s rights worldwide.

The Education International (EI) Status of Women Committee met ahead of the 48th Executive Board meeting, held from 25-27 October, in Brussels, Belgium, and recommended that the Board issue a statement, after Committee members discussed some of the demonstrations that have taken place in support of women’s rights in countries including Argentina and Poland.

Many such demonstrations have taken place because of the shockingly high rates of violence against women and girls in most regions. The Executive Board also adopted the Status of Women Committee’s recommendation that a call to action be sent to all EI member organisations, urging them to advocate for the adoption of a binding ILO standard (ergo a Convention and accompanying Recommendation) on ‘Violence and Harassment in the World of Work’. The International Trade Union Confederation (ITUC) has been leading the ‘Stop Violence at Work!’ campaign, calling on its members to lobby their governments to support a proposed ILO standard.

EI member organisations can expect to receive further details about the call to action in the coming weeks.
