OSCE media freedom representative condemns attack against Greek journalist, urges swift investigation
The OSCE Representative on Freedom of the Media, Dunja Mijatović, today condemned an attack on the Greek sports journalist George Tselika and called for a swift investigation by the authorities.
“It is of great importance that the Greek authorities publicly condemn this and every case of violence against journalists, which would send a clear message to the public that such assaults are not tolerated,” Mijatović wrote in a letter to the Greek Foreign Minister, Dimitris Avramopoulos.
According to media reports, George Tselika, a sports journalist at Greek TV station SKAI, was assaulted outside of the Giorgos Karaiskakis football stadium in Athens on 14 April.
Tselika was reportedly identified as a journalist and was severely beaten, sustaining a fractured pelvis and broken ribs. The incident occurred during a 15-minute strike action in protest at previous incidents of violence against sports journalists.
