Budgets MEPs back €5.1m aid for 2,132 redundant road haulage workers in France
Budgets Committee MEPs approved €5,146,800 in EU aid on Monday to help 2,132 road haulage and delivery workers, made redundant by road transport company MoryGlobal SAS across France, to find new jobs. The European Globalisation Adjustment Fund (EGF) aid still needs to be approved by Parliament as a whole and by the Council of Ministers.
The 2,132 lorry drivers and their delivery colleagues lost their jobs due to the bankruptcy and closure of the MoryGlobal road haulage and delivery company, as a result of the global financial and economic crisis which deeply affected the road haulage sector.
The EGF aid would help the workers to find new jobs by co-financing, with the French government, an employment training programme. All the redundant workers are expected to participate.
The draft resolution, by rapporteur Anneli Jäätteenmäki (ALDE, FI), was approved by 22 votes to 4, with no abstentions. The plenary vote is scheduled for 26 May, and the Council is set to approve the aid request on 6 June.
