WWF Statement on CRDB Bank and United Bank for Africa's Support of Stiegler's Gorge Hydropower Dam in Selous Game Reserve
Responding to the news that CRDB Bank and United Bank for Africa have agreed to financially facilitate the construction of Stiegler’s Gorge hydropower dam in the Selous Game Reserve, Aslihan Tumer, Head of Campaigns at WWF-International, said:
"It is concerning that these banks are joining Afreximbank in facilitating the construction of a mega-dam in the heart of a UNESCO World Heritage site when the necessary environmental assessment has not been completed by Tanzania’s government as required by national law.
"Their support goes against best practice in the banking sector. The proposed dam puts a protected area of global importance, as well as the livelihoods of more than 200,000 people who live downstream, at risk. WWF urgently calls for investors to abide by international best practices. A Strategic Environmental Assessment that meets international standards must be completed before the project can move forward."
