The OECD welcomes Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull’s announcement at COP21 that Australia intends to ratify the Kyoto Protocol’s second commitment period, which sets mitigation targets and reporting requirements for 2013-2020.

Three-quarters of all Protocol Parties (144 of 192) must ratify the second commitment period amendment to the Kyoto Protocol for it to formally enter into force. As of 1 December 2015, 54 countries had ratified it. It is therefore positive to see an additional country take steps towards ratification.

The OECD report Climate Change Mitigation: Policies and Progress, presented in the OECD Workspace at COP21 Tuesday, shows that many countries are not achieving reductions fast enough based on their historic performance to reach their targets.

Governments need to significantly strengthen mitigation efforts. Tuesday’s announcement by Australia is an important symbolic signal of intent by the country towards greater climate ambition.

The OECD stands ready to support Australia and our other member and partner countries as they seek to meet their commitments for 2020 and beyond, and reach an ambitious agreement to fight climate change in Paris over the next fortnight.
