Nigeria remembers killed and displaced teachers | WPN World People News

At the occasion of the national 2015 World Teachers' Day event on 5 October, the President of the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT), Michael Olukoya, gravely reminded the public of the losses his union has suffered because extremist group Boko Haram’s attacks on schools, students and teachers.

He detailed that 308 teachers were killed in Borno State, the same area where more than 200 school girls were kidnapped in 2014; 75 in Adamawa State; 18 in Yobe State; 25 in Kaduna State; 120 in Plateau State; 63 in Kano State; and two in Gombe State.

In addition to those killed, another 19,000 teachers have been displaced due to the ongoing violence of Boko Haram’s activities.

To avoid further bloodshed and loss of teachers, the NUT leader called on the federal government to increase security measures around public schools throughout the country.
