WFP Launches Stunting Prevention Initiative In Kurram Agency, FATA
The United Nations World Food Programme (WFP), in partnership with the Directorate of Health Services in the Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA) of Pakistan, has formally launched a programme to prevent stunting in the Kurram Agency of FATA. Stunting occurs when a child’s growth and development is impaired from poor nutrition. The effort aims to prevent chronic malnutrition in children under five years of age as well as in pregnant women and nursing mothers. In the Kurram Agency, stunting rates stand at 57.6 percent, which is alarmingly high and well above the global average.

UNICEF responds to Sierra Leone mudslide as more than 100 children reported dead
UNICEF is on the ground urgently responding to the needs of displaced families affected by the flooding and landslides in Sierra Leone’s capital Freetown which have killed several hundred people including at least 109 children, according to government sources. The death-toll is expected to rise, with over 600 people, including many children, still unaccounted for.

OSCE PA leaders condemn Barcelona attack, stress need for countering violent extremism in all its forms
OSCE Parliamentary President Christine Muttonen (Austria), Ad Hoc Committee on Countering Terrorism Chair Makis Voridis (Greece) and human rights committee Chair Nacho Sanchez Amor (Spain) condemned the attack in Barcelona, Spain, which is being treated by the authorities as terrorism. At least 13 people were killed and 50 seriously injured when a van plowed into pedestrians in the city’s historic Las Ramblas district, on August 17th.
