Security Council Should Focus on Protecting Civilians, Human Rights

The United Nations Security Council should halt the withdrawal of the UN-African Union peacekeeping mission from Darfur in view of the political instability in Sudan and continuing insecurity for civilians, Human Rights Watch said on June 11, 2019. This week, the Security Council will discuss the mandate of the joint mission (UNAMID), which is up for renewal at the end of June 2019 and it is slated to shut down in 2020.

Sudan’s forces violently attacked protesters, bystanders, and medical workers on June 3, 2019, reportedly killing at least 35 people and injuring hundreds, Human Rights Watch said on June 04, 2019. The forces attacking protesters included the Rapid Support Force (RSF), a paramilitary force with a well-documented record of abuse.
