WWF response to Sanchi oil tanker collision

“WWF thoughts are with the families of those tragically killed in the Sanchi oil tanker collision.

“We now have an environmental disaster unfolding before our eyes. The stricken tanker is leaking its cargo of condensate, which is toxic to marine mammals, fish, sea turtles and seabirds. WWF calls for the urgent mobilisation of all available containment equipment to remove the toxic slick and reduce the threat it poses to marine life.”

Representing the interests of the millions of people who use, visit, study and rely on the Atchafalaya Great River Swamp, on January 11, several groups asked a Louisiana federal district court to vacate a recent decision by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (Corps) that would allow the controversial Bayou Bridge pipeline to be constructed through the Atchafalaya Basin, one of the nation’s ecological crown jewels, and through hundreds of Louisiana’s streams, rivers, lakes, wetlands and bayous.

EPA orders further assessment work at Wolverine tannery, landfill in Rockford, Michigan

On January 10, U.S. Environmental Protection Agency issued an administrative order to Wolverine World Wide Inc. to conduct further assessment and potential cleanup work at its former tannery and at the House Street landfill in Rockford, Mich. The order requires additional investigation and characterization of soil, groundwater and river sediment contaminated with hazardous substances including arsenic, chromium, mercury and ammonia.
