Elephant poaching levels are the worst in a decade and recorded ivory seizures are at their highest levels since 1989, according to a report published today by the United Nations-backed convention on endangered species.

CERF gives $5 million for people affected by drought and food insecurity in Angola

Angola has recently been impacted by drought in portions of the country due to a significant decrease in rainfall, which has adversely affected the food security of vulnerable households and malnutrition levels. According to Government assessments, an estimated 366,780 households, or some 1.8 million people are affected by drought in 11 provinces. A nutrition survey conducted in 10 provinces in April and March 2012 revealed that more than 533,000 children under age 5 in surveyed areas are affected by malnutrition. Of this, more than 105,000 are suffering from severe malnutrition.

One in ten natural World Heritage Sites in Danger

UNESCO’s World Heritage Committee’s annual meeting, which starts in St Petersburg on Sunday, will see a total of 36 new sites considered for inscription as natural and cultural sites, and a series of monitoring reports on the sites already listed. But if IUCN’s recommendations to add four World Heritage sites to the Danger List are accepted, 21 out of the 211 –one in ten- natural World Heritage Sites will be officially “in danger.”
