EPA requires Modesto wholesaler to protect Central Valley wetlands and pay penalty, following destruction of rare habitat
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency announced a settlement with Edward Lynn Brown, a canned food and nut wholesaler in Modesto, Calif. for destroying nearly 33 acres of wetlands, known as vernal pools, north of Merced, Calif. The settlement requires Brown to pay a $160,000 penalty and purchase and endow a conservation easement valued at $1 million.

World Bank Supports Mozambique’s Conservation and Biodiversity Efforts to Reduce Poverty
The World Bank Group’s Board of Executive Directors approved a US$40 million International Development Association (IDA)* grant to support the implementation of the Government of Mozambique’s Conservation Areas for Biodiversity and Development Project, known as Mozbio. The World Bank’s Board of Executive Directors approved the Municipal Solid Waste Management Project, financed with a $12 million grant from the Global Environment Facility (GEF) to the People’s Republic of China. This project will help improve the environmental performance of existing municipal solid waste incinerators through capacity building and demonstration of best available techniques (BAT) and best environmental practices (BEP) in accordance with the Stockholm Convention on Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs).
