EPA Fines Wharton Chemical for Hazardous Waste Violations

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency recently conducted a compliance evaluation of Wharton Chemical in Hungerford, Texas. The evaluation revealed violations of the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA) related to the storage and handling of hazardous waste at the facility. The company will pay a $230,000 civil penalty to settle allegations that it violated RCRA, and taking steps to protect the local community from health and environmental risks associated with hazardous waste.

An Administrative Law Judge at the California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC) issued a proposed decision (attached) rejecting San Diego Gas & Electric (SDG&E) proposal to build a $2 billion gas plant, known as Carlsbad on March 6. The plant would partially replace the shuttered San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station (SONGS). The proposed 600 megawatt (MW) plant was opposed by a variety of groups, including the Sierra Club, Earthjustice and California Environmental Justice Alliance (CEJA), as it was moving through the approval process before clean energy alternatives were considered.
