In a new study, scientists analysed eight years of XMM-Newton observations of the black hole at the core of an active galaxy known as PG 1114+445, showing how ultrafast winds – outflows of gas emitted from the accretion disk very close to the black hole – interact with the interstellar matter in central parts of the galaxy. These outflows have been spotted before but the new study clearly identifies, for the first time, three phases of their interaction with the host galaxy.

The cryogenic (cold) portion of the Euclid space telescope's Near Infrared Spectrometer and Photometer (NISP) instrument. NASA led the procurement and delivery of the detectors for the NISP instrument. The gold-coated hardware is the 16 sensor-chip electronics integrated with the infrared sensors.

A new study used a temperature gradient to observe how highly concentrated antibody solutions, like those common in some drugs, separate into phases, like an oil and water solution. At colder temperatures, cloudy droplets begin to form in the once clear solution. As the droplets grow and settle to the bottom of the container, the solution separates into two distinct phases. This phase separation can affect a drug’s shelf life and stability.
