Fireball Appears Over the Philippines, Capturing the Attention of Astronomy Enthusiasts
The asteroid, designated "CAQDTL2," passed through Earth's atmosphere at 4:39 PM GMT on September 4, finally disintegrating above the waters northeast of Luzon Island in the Philippines. In an instant, it turned into a magnificent fireball that illuminated the night sky. The asteroid, approximately 1 meter in diameter, originated from the asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter. Its brightness reached magnitude -8 as it passed through the atmosphere, drawing widespread attention from astronomy enthusiasts around the world.
Taiwan's Lulin Observatory successfully captured this spectacular event and uploaded the video to social media, sparking enthusiastic discussions among netizens. In the video, a sudden intense flash of light appears in the dark night sky, lasting about three seconds before vanishing in the distance. Despite less-than-ideal weather conditions at the time of filming, the video clearly showcases the magnificent sight of the fireball.
In addition to Taiwan, observers in the Philippines also recorded the asteroid’s descent. The fireball, captured through high-definition cameras, showed the object streaking across the sky and disappearing over the horizon in a breathtaking display. Many people shared their experiences of witnessing the fireball on social media, with numerous comments expressing awe. Some initially thought it was lightning, only realizing later that they had witnessed a rare astronomical event.
According to the International Meteor Organization, this marks the ninth time in history that an asteroid’s passage through Earth’s atmosphere was predicted in advance. Due to the asteroid’s small size, it posed no threat to Earth, and any meteorite fragments likely fell into the surrounding seas or land near the Philippines. The phenomenon was observed by the U.S. Catalina Sky Survey, a system dedicated to detecting near-Earth asteroids and assessing potential threats. This successful observation not only highlights advancements in astronomy but also gave astronomy enthusiasts worldwide the opportunity to witness this rare event firsthand.
