Removal of Limitations of Composites at Superheat Temperatures
Iranian researchers produced composites that can be used at superheat temperatures.
Due to their desirable mechanical properties at high temperatures, the composites increase the performance and lifetime of structures in aerospace industry.
Various industries, specially aerospace industry, feel the need for new materials that are able to tolerate temperatures higher than 2000°C in a long period in addition to the ability to work at oxidant and corrosive atmospheres.
The main objective of the research was to obtain the license for the production of zirconium diboride (ZrB2)-based composites through a method that can be industrialized. Improving physical and mechanical properties and sintering behavior of composites by using silicon carbide (SiC) additives at nanometric and micrometric scales, molybdenum disilicide (MoSi2) and boron carbide (B4C) are among other objectives of the research.
Results of the research settle many problems in the application of composites at high temperatures. In other words, the production of objects with high temperature properties will be possible for the manufacturing of pieces used in aerospace industries, including ultrasonic spacecrafts, atmosphere re-entering airplanes, and pieces of jet engines.
According to one of the researchers, there are various methods for the production of zirconium diboride-based composites, including spark plasma sintering (SPS), hot pressure and hot isostatic pressure (HIP). However, one of the simplest methods for the production of these composites is pressureless sintering, which has been used in this research too.
