Reports says strokes may come from heavy drinking
US researchers have discovered the risk of stroke doubles or is higher in the hour after drinking one serving of wine, beer or spirits.
Scientists from the Cardiovascular Epidemiology Research Unit at Harvard Medical School in Boston, interviewed 390 ischemic stroke patients only days after the event to find that 14 patients had consumed alcohol within one hour of stroke onset.
A report stemming from the research says the evidence on heavy drinking has been consistent in showing that drinking raises stroke risk.
Researchers explained that just after drinking, blood pressure rises and blood platelets become stickier, increasing the risk of a clot forming.
But, the report said, drinking small amounts of alcohol is associated with beneficial changes in blood lipids and more flexible blood vessels, which could reduce risk overall.
