Substantial decline in global measles deaths, but disease still kills 90 000 per year
In 2016, an estimated 90 000 people died from measles – an 84% drop from more than 550 000 deaths in 2000 – according to a new report published by leading health organizations, on October 26. This marks the first time global measles deaths have fallen below 100 000 per year.

State of children's medicines in the EU
On October 26, the Commission presents a report to the European Parliament and the Council, on progress made in children's medicines since the Paediatric Regulation came into force 10 years ago. It concludes that positive advances in the development of medicines for children could not have been achieved without specific EU legislation – e.g. the authorisation of 260 new medicines.

NIH study identifies brain patterns underlying mothers’ responses to infant cries
Infant cries activate specific brain regions related to movement and speech, according to a National Institutes of Health study of mothers in 11 countries. The findings, led by researchers at NIH’s Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD), identify behaviors and underlying brain activities that are consistent among mothers from different cultures. Understanding these reactions may help in identifying and treating caregivers at risk for child maltreatment and other problematic behaviors.
